From the report: “The goal of the Defense Science Board (DSB) Task Force on Design and Acquisition of Software for Defense Systems was to determine whether iterative software development practices evolved in the commercial world are applicable to the development and sustainment of software for the Department of Defense (DOD). Software has become one of the most important components of our Nation’s weapons systems, and it continues to grow in importance. Software defines the way our systems see, communicate, and operate in combat. Design and acquisition decisions at the beginning of the software development process frequently have far-reaching and long-term effects that impact the weapon system’s efficacy on the battlefield and its ability to adapt to changing requirements.”
