From the summary: "The Army requested that RAND Arroyo Center provide analyses to improve the setting of special and incentive (S&I) pays, focusing on its selective reenlistment bonus (SRB) program. SRBs are a monetary incentive offered to qualified soldiers who reenlist for an additional obligated service (AOS) in the Regular Army in certain military occupational specialties (MOSs). The purpose of the improvement would be to help modernize the SRB program by increasing the bonuses’ efficiency and their incentives for higher performance as part of the Army’s talent management strategy. While past research consistently found that reenlistment bonuses increase the likelihood that a service member reenlists and continues to serve, there is little evidence on how they increase performance"
